A crown wheel is a wheel with cogs or teeth set at right angles to its plane and the pinion is a small cogwheel that meshes with the crown wheel.

Selective case hardening is done to import maximum strength to the pinion to maximize wear resistance. Both Crown Wheel and pinion are checked thoroughly for high spots that prevents premature failure ensuring a noise free operation. The backlash is kept with in 0.16-0.26 MM band to keep noise and vibration to a minimum with an accurate interface fit. The bore grinding process ensures perfect interface fit with the differential cage.
